The ASCA Board of Directors is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 ASCA Lifetime Achievement Award:

Michael J. Ryan and Michelle Berryessa

This is ASCA’s highest honor, presented to individuals whose dedication and service have left a lasting impact on the Australian Shepherd breed and our organization. These awards will be presented at the Welcome Reception during the 2026 ASCA Nationals in Greeley, Colorado.

Michael J. Ryan

For more than five decades, Michael J. Ryan has devoted his life to the preservation, promotion, and advancement of the Australian Shepherd. A breeder, historian, stockdog enthusiast, and ASCA Senior Breeder Judge, Michael has judged events throughout the United States and internationally since 1984. His reputation for integrity, breed knowledge, and commitment to preserving the Australian Shepherd as a functional working dog has earned him the respect of breeders, competitors, and judges around the world.

Michael’s contributions to ASCA extend far beyond the judging ring. He held leadership positions in several affiliate clubs, helped establish some of the earliest ASCA-oriented stockdog activities in the Upper Midwest, organized training opportunities and trials, mentored countless exhibitors and breeders, and worked tirelessly to promote the breed during its formative years. He also played a pivotal role in preserving Australian Shepherd history through his collaboration with Ernest Hartnagle on the creation of the Australian Shepherd “Spiderweb,” hand-lettering and illustrating the now-iconic genealogical work that remains an invaluable resource to breeders and historians today. Through his mentorship, service, and dedication to preserving both the history and purpose of the breed, Michael has left an enduring legacy that continues to influence generations of Australian Shepherd enthusiasts.

Michelle Berryessa

Michelle Berryessa has dedicated decades of volunteer service to both ASCA and the Australian Shepherd Club of Washington, providing steady leadership, organizational expertise, and unwavering support to the Australian Shepherd community. Her service to ASCA includes multiple terms on the Board of Directors, serving as Director, Treasurer, and later President. Throughout her tenure, Michelle contributed to ASCA governance, committee work, policy development, and organizational decision-making that helped guide the club through years of growth and change.

At the affiliate level, Michelle has been a cornerstone of the Australian Shepherd Club of Washington, serving in numerous leadership and operational roles including Treasurer, Trial Secretary, and event coordinator. Her commitment to accuracy, accountability, and excellence has helped ensure the success of countless club events and activities. Beyond her official positions, Michelle has mentored volunteers, supported new members, and quietly worked behind the scenes to keep projects moving forward. Her dedication, reliability, and willingness to serve wherever needed have strengthened both ASC of WA and ASCA, leaving a lasting impact on the organization and the people within it.
